• Wedge Shoes and Sandals
Wedges get their name for a somewhat triangular, wedge shape. In a wedge, unlike most shoes, the heel runs under the foot, from the back of the shoe to the middle or front. Weight distribution in the wedge heel is primarily on the balls of the feet and the toes.
Wedge heels add height but are easier to walk in than stilettos. Wedges will add definition and shape to heavy ankles, making them appear thinner. They visually balance out legs and ankles. Heel heights range from low to high. The shape and the length of the heel is what classifies it as a wedge. Wedge heels can have what looks like an artificial wood-grain. Espadrilles are a type of shoe where the wedge is covered with a woven rope braiding.
Many people confuse platforms and wedges. While shoes with wedge heels may have platform soles, the two features do not always appear together. When they do, they're considered "platform wedges."
Wedge heels are very fashionable shoes and a versatile choice in women's footwear. They're worldly and sophisticated. Like high heel shoes, wedges are appropriate for any occasion. With the thick heel, you can wear them with a stylish beach outfit or match them with a formal black dress when using a dressier style of the wedge shoe. Their heels look great with nearly any length skirt or dress. They work very well with flowing skirts, gauchos, vintage denim, a full skirt, high-waisted short, thin, gauzy fabrics, wrap dresses, bohemian styles, and wide or flared jeans or pants.
The wedge shoe does not look well with pants with narrow or straight legs, pencil skirts and capris. When paired with very tight-fitting clothing, wedges can look a bit clunky.
Even women who don't normally wear heels will likely enjoy this type of shoe. Instead of having to balance on the point of small heel, the wedge allows you to firmly place your full heel on the ground. For those not used to wearing high heels, a wedge heel at least 3-inches high is suggested. The wide heel will allow you to balance once you stand in the shoe. You'll feel less discomfort from this type heel. Once you get comfortable wearing 3-inch heels, gradually move up in height as well as narrowing the width. Follow up with a 3 1/4 inch heel, then a 4-inch heel, a 4 1/4 inch-heel, and continue from there until you reach your comfort level.
